HOUSE BILL PASSED AVERTING RAIL STRIKE
Taking the first major step in avoiding a walkout of workers that would have a serious impact on the U.S. economy prior to the holiday season, the chamber passed the tentative agreement resolution in a 290-137 vote, sending it to the Senate for consideration just over one week out from the Dec. 9 strike deadline.
The House will also vote separately on Wednesday on an “enrollment correction” bill that would add seven days of paid sick leave per year to the deal. If passed, this bill be sent to the Senate for consideration.
According to industry analysts, agriculture, automotive, chemical, packaging and industrial parts would have been most severely impacted.
Railroads would have commenced limiting some of their services, as early as this week-end and leaving products stranded and prompting rail line cancellations.
Mike Sommers, President of the American Petroleum Institute stated on Tuesday that “…shutting down our rail system, even for one day, would have a significant impact on U.S. gasoline supply and could lead to higher prices for American consumers and businesses ahead of the holiday.”
